Thanks to everyone for all the presents and goodwill messages in recent weeks.

I've had a great time coaching for RTSC and worked with a wonderful team of coaches. It's been great helping the club to consistently be the top club in the County.

Life changes and new challenges have to be faced. I have a very exciting new opportunity, but I'll be watching out for your continued success in the future.

Please bring an empty drinks bottle for refills. All groups will partake in at least one water activity so ensure that you all have a couple of pairs of trainers and changes of clothing. A good idea is to bring swim wear for these activities to wear under the supplied wetsuits. Don't forget a towel and sun cream in case of hot weather.

    Jack Petchey Achievement Award Nominations

It's time to get your thinking caps on and place your nominations for the next round of voting for the Jack Petchey Achievement Awards Scheme.

The Achievement Awards Scheme enables the club to recognise, reward and celebrate the achievements of our young members. It is not about being the fastest or the more gifted, but about recognising efforts and contributions of members. It works well because the swimmers themselves are involved in the nominating of individuals and selecting the winners. The winner will be given the opportunity to make a financial contribution to the Club they are involved in.

    Each winner receives:

    • A framed certificate
    • A Jack Petchey young achievers badge
    • £200 to be spent on a club project nominated by the young person

We are also looking for suggestions/ideas to add to our ‘wish list’ of things to spend the money on. This can include additional training equipment, specialist courses or funding for fun events such as discos, days out etc. If you have any suggestions please email them to romfordtownsc@aol.com.

Nominees must be between 11 and 25yrs and the voting for 2014 is now open. Anyone from the Club can nominate so let’s get thinking and get the nominations in. Please email your nomination, along with your reasons why that individual should be nominated, to romfordtownsc@aol.com by 25th June 2014.

    Basildon Sporting Village

Please note revised schedule for the Essex Winter Competition 2013. Saturday Warm Up now starts at 1pm.

A great weekend at the County Winter Champs with some good swims across the board. Having lost a few of our older swimmers at the end of last season we did well to retain the Hugh Joiner, Top Club Trophy and the Masters Shield as Top Club in the distance events.

Amy Marren had been at the British Disability Short Course Champs in Sheffield over the weekend. From her 8 individual events she took 7 gold and a silver all in PB times. She also took the award as the top female swimmer. She then flew out yesterday to Brazil to compete in a small GB representative team in the Brazilian School Games in Sau Paulo.

RTSC Swim Shop - Orders now being taken for Named club hats

RTSC club hats with the swimmer's name can now be ordered from Tracey Thompson who can be contacted by text on 07904 410998. Voice calls on this number should be made in the evenings only. The £10 cost must be paid before any orders will be made.

    Thank You Tesco!

On Tuesday 22nd October both RTSC Secretaries Jo-Ann and Angela were invited along to the opening of the new Tesco express on Marlborough Road in Romford.

As part of the opening Tescos Stores gave RTSC a generous charitable donation of £500. I'm sure you will agree this will help fund the club tremendously.

25th-27th October - ASA National Short Course Championships - Sheffield

RTSC Masters sent a team of 14 swimmers to this year's championships. All of the team members came away with at least one medal each, but the number of personal bests broken showed that the level of training had been very successful, so a big thanks has to go to Martin Fenner, the Masters Coach.

The team were Tony Pepper, Janos Leigh, Jill Complin, Barbara Boxall, Alyson Fordham, Madeline Raymond, Martin Lane, Wendy Hunter, Julie Sanders, Dawn Palmer, Chris Bumby, Gary Wraight, Michael Jennings, Sally Wood, David Ebanks and Michelle Curry.

However despite all these great performances the weekend highlight was the Women’s 200+ 4x100 Freestyle where Alyson, Barbara, Madeline, Dawn broke the European and British Records with a brilliant team performance.

Nominees must be between 11 and 25yrs and the voting for the second period of 2013 is now open. Anyone from the Club can nominate so let’s get thinking and get the nominations in. Please email your nomination, along with your reasons why that individual should be nominated, to romfordtownsc@aol.com by 25th November 2013.

    Sunday 8th September - Stubbers

Another successful day trip to Stubbers was had by all. I would like to say a big thankyou and well done to all the swimmers who all behaved splendidly and represented our club well. Also a big thankyou to all the adults who helped out on the day , as without your help and support the day would not have been so successful.

I have a few items still that were left behind. If you are missing anything please do contact myself or Clare.

We were lucky enough to have a very kind parent take photos on the day like previous years. So are now selling DVD copies of all pictures for £2 (all proceeds go towards the next social event) . Again please contact either myself or Clare if you would like to purchase one.

Madeline Raymond awarded Jack Petchey Leader Award

Madeline's association with Romford Town SC goes back many years from the time she herself used to compete for the club through to her three children, Alex, Danielle and Nicole also playing an important role for the club as they swam at County, District and National Level.

As a lane coach Madeline has for many years been an integral part of the coaching team either in a supporting role covering for all squads when required and in particular working with B squad.

For over fifteen years she has proved to be a real asset to the club as she has worked alongside Kevin Engstrom (B Squad coach) as a lane coach developing swimmers and contributing to the clubs success. Not only would she be seen on poolside coaching during the week but also assisting at Essex League and Junior "Speedo"/"Arena" League galas motivating both swimmers and teams alike.

Despite her children no longer training, Madeline has continued her close links with the club, providing the weekly Land Training programme for B squad in addition acting as cover coach when available on the pool deck.

Madeline's contribution to Romford Town, be it in her coaching role and swimming for the Masters has been a huge one over the years and her continued involvement makes the Jack Petchey Leadership Award a very deserved one.

15th September - Judge One Course - Fullwell Cross

As the Club heads towards the hosting the Non-National Qualifier Gala, the first of three Galas coming up in the next four months, it is important to recognise the need for the Club to have as many trained Officials as possible. Last year we trained four new Officials. While this is good news, we still need many more, especially with the number of galas the Club hosts.

There is a Training course starting in September. Training consists of three one hour Classroom sessions, with poolside mentoring sessions during Galas that can be arranged around when your children swim. Mentoring is likely to be with people you already know!

We would strongly encourage as many parents as possible, especially from the younger swimmers, to come forward and volunteer for the vital role within the club. You will be fully supported all the way through by the other RTSC Officials.

Nominees must be between 11 and 25yrs and the voting for the first period of 2013 is now open. Anyone from the Club can nominate so let’s get thinking and get the nominations in. Please email your nomination, along with your reasons why that individual should be nominated, to romfordtownsc@aol.com by the 25th June 2013.

    RTSC Officials Qualify at Redbridge

As well as a great weekend for RTSC in the pool, it was also a great weekend for our Officials on poolside. It started on Saturday when Veronica Smith completed her Judge Level One. On Sunday the weekend got even better when Nigel Drury completed his Judge Level One and Dave Weston completed his Judge Level Two. Congratulations to all three.

Qualified Officials are very important to the club. Without them the club could not compete in the various swimming leagues we do. More importantly, the club would not be able to host the Galas we do and generate the funds that help to keep costs down for parents. Therefore it is important we have more parents to come forward to train as Officials. There is very little time involved beyond the Galas you will attend already. Please consider offering your help in this important roll. Contact Jim Rourke to find out more about what is involved.

Swimmers in B, C and D Squads will be handed partially completed entry forms by their coaches. Please DOUBLE CHECK EVERYTHING!! Then you may return forms with your cheque direct to Jo Coles or back to your coach.Forms to be returned by Wednesday 19th December.

Please be aware that the club expect to have more than 80 swimmers competing at the Championships in 2013 and your help in reducing unnecessary work for Jo over the holiday period would be greatly appreciated.

    Jack Petchey Achievement Award Winners

Romford Town Swimming Club’s Jack Petchey Achievement Award winners for the first half of 2012 received their awards on last Monday evening at the Queens Theatre in Hornchurch.

The awards were presented by ex-Paralympic gold medallist Danny Crates. Rebecca Cribb and Georgia Milton were amongst over 100 award winners from London and Essex present.

Rebecca Cribb - Jack Petchey Winner Georgia Milton - Jack Petchey Winner

Established in 1999, The Jack Petchey Foundation gives grants to programmes and projects that benefit young people aged 11-25. The Foundation exists to raise the aspirations of young people, to help them take advantage of opportunities and play a full part in society.

Nominees must be between 11 and 25yrs and the voting for the first period of 2012 is now open. Anyone from the Club can nominate so let’s get thinking and get the nominations in. Please email your nomination, along with your reasons why that individual should be nominated, to romfordtownsc@aol.com by the 15th November 2012.

    Well Done Amy Marren!

Amy Marren - Good Luck in Paralympics

Amy had a great start to her Paralympic campaign on the opening Friday with a PB over 100m Backstroke which catapulted her into the evening Final. Another great swim in the evening showed her potential as she turned 3rd at the half way point. Although unable to hold the speed of the older ladies in the closing stages she still managed a fabulous 4th place finish.

Given a few days to rest up she was back for the 400m Freestyle on Tuesday and a strong 3secs PB in the morning heats again put her in the evening mix. A well paced evening swim saw her again smash her morning best by a further 3secs to finish just outside of the medals with a fantastic 4th place.

She was back in action the following morning where another PB over 50m Freestyle saw her finish as a reserve finalist this time.

Congratulations to Ron and Val Engstrom!!

    Seeking New Committee Members

RTSC’s club committee consists of a number of parents of swimmers along with some other members who have been involved with the club over the years. We have monthly meetings at which we discuss the numerous topics which require attention in order to keep the club running as smoothly as possible.

Most committee members are tasked with looking after particular aspects of the club's make-up. This includes organising RTSC’s own galas, collecting quarterly fees, controlling poolside staffing, stocking the club shop and fulfilling the criteria required by the ASA to gain Swim 21 accreditation.

There are many other jobs that we do which are vital to the success and smooth running of the club. We are actively recruiting for enthusiastic volunteers to assist in a number of capacities. These include Club Secretary, Publicity Officer and Gala Volunteer Secretary.

If you are able to devote some time either in a committee role or just as a helper, either at galas or behind the scenes, please let a member of the committee know or email us at romfordtownsc@aol.com for further information.

Saturday 28th July - Stubbers Fun Activity Day

Saturday saw Romford Town's annual visit to Stubbers. The sun did not let us down and neither did 55 children from across the squads.

    Stubbers 2012 Group 1

We would personally like to thank all of the children who attended this day for their impeccable behaviour and it was clear to see everyone had a great day . They really were a credit to the club. We would also like to thank all our fellow helper parents without whose involvement the day would not have been the success it was. See you all the same time, same place in 2013.
